Deepening Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration to Promote Joint Breakthroughs in Key Core Technologies: The First Science & Technology Forum on Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration of Tiangong International is Held
Technological innovation is the core competitiveness for enterprise development. To deepen industry-academia-research collaboration and advance coordinated efforts in tackling key core technologies, the First Science & Technology Forum on Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration of Tiangong International was held on February 25, 2023, at Jiangsu Tiangong Cemented Carbide Technology Co., Ltd. The Forum saw participation from research institutes and universities including the Central Iron & Steel Research Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Northeastern University, Southeast University, Nanjing Tech University, Jiangsu University, and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. Attendees included Wang Xiaonan (Director of the Danyang Science and Technology Bureau), Zhu Xiaokun (Chairman of the Board of Tiangong International), Wu Suojun (General Manager of Tiangong International), and Zhu Zefeng (Chief Executive Officer of Tiangong International).
In his speech, Wu Suojun (General Manager of Tiangong International) pointed out that deepening industry-academia-research collaboration aimed to drive joint breakthroughs in key core technologies. By partnering with research institutes on specific projects, Tiangong International will focus on addressing existing technical bottlenecks. This collaborative project approach will help resolve technical challenges across various industrial sectors during product development, achieving greater technological advancements.
The First Science & Technology Forum on Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration was held based on new market demands and technologies. Tiangong International seized the opportunity to meet evolving market needs and was oriented at overcoming more technical bottlenecks by fostering collaborative research with research institutes. Currently, Tiangong has expanded its business into such industrial sectors as standard cutting tools, high-speed steel, thread cutting tools, mould steel, powder metallurgy, and cemented carbide. It has accomplished a transition from quantity-focused growth to quality-driven development. The comprehensive strength of its tool and mould steel has risen to rank first globally. The global influence of its brands in standard cutting tools, thread cutting tools, and cemented carbide tools continues to grow, while its large-scale powder metallurgy production stands as the only such operation in China. These achievements exemplify the proactive stance of all Tiangong employees and their commitment to advancing China's new materials and precision cutting tool industries. Particularly, in recent years, while accelerating the modernization and upgrading of equipment and continuously adjusting the product mix, Tiangong has prioritized technological innovation, new product development, and expanding end-market applications as its primary development directions. It has established a technological innovation system supported by fundamental research and basic technological innovation, in order to continuously meet market demand.
To address its current technical challenges, Tiangong actively collaborates with major research institutes on technical research. It adopts a tailored pattern, namely establishing dedicated cooperation models for each specific project, so as to clearly define the problems to be tackled, objectives to be achieved, and timelines for completion. With this pattern, Tiangong could thoroughly resolve any problems that hinder Tiangong’s rapid development, translate commitments into concrete actions, and demonstrate the significance and value of cooperation through tangible outcomes.
During the Forum, Tiangong International signed industry-academia-research collaboration agreements with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Central Iron & Steel Research Institute, Northeastern University, and the Marine Equipment and Technology Institute of Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. These agreements clearly defined the collaborative research projects, with both parties expressing strong confidence in achieving the intended targets.
Throughout the Forum, the participating research institutes presented reports and shared insights on potential challenges in the production processes of Tiangong’s cutting tools and tool and mould steel products, as well as progress outcomes from previous collaborative projects. They also reaffirmed their commitment to striving for further breakthroughs and contributing to Tiangong’s future development.
